The Idiocy Continues – Cudjoe Fire Station

drama-312318_1280Another day, another over-budget project.  What makes this one special is that the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) took steps to contain costs rather than simply gripe and then rubber stamp the spending.  Although Carruthers, no paragon of financial restraint herself, did make some crack about marble counter tops.

If the BOCC truly wanted to do right by the taxpayers, they could demand accurate budget estimates from staff at the outset.  They could demand that staff compare those estimates to similar projects done elsewhere to demonstrate that they did their homework.  They could hold staff accountable if their estimates consistently come in way over actual costs. Carruthers Tax Lien Update

Looks like the IRS has removed the lien from Carruthers’s property.  Presumably she managed to pay her tax bill.  Wonder where she found the money?

Big Coppitt – In Trouble Again

houstonUpdate:  I notice I’m getting a lot of hits on this post.  So I want to let people know where they can find the documents I’m looking at.  Here’s a link to FDEP’s Oculus website.  Click on “Public Oculus Login”.  Select “Wastewater” from the top menu titled “Catalog”.  Select “Discovery_Compliance” from the bottom menu titled “Profile”.  To the right where it says “Facility-site ID”, click the “…” button.  From there you can search for the wastewater treatment plant you are interested in.  I search by name and select the one I want from a list.  Then press the search button and all available documents will show up.

Update Part 2:   A little birdy informed that the FKAA posts the sampling results in accordance with the settlement agreement.  Mystery solved.

I saw this letter over at KeysNews.com (the Citizen).  Apparently, the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) posts surface water sampling data in the vicinity of the Cudjoe Regional shallow wells on their website.  How transparent of them! Continue reading

Fake News and Canal News

deceive-1299043__340It turns out fake news is a thing these days, and it’s not just the Key West Citizen.  Google and Facebook are changing their policies to avoid displaying ads on “sites containing content that is illegal, misleading or deceptive, which includes fake news”.

Here’s another angle on the whole issue.  It turns out teenagers in Macedonia make fake news sites to generate a extra pocket money.  Who knew?  You can make some pretty good coin just by making up fake news stories that attract a lot of hits.  And here I am slogging through documents and boring videos for free!  I could learn a thing or two from those Macedonian teenagers (and the Key West Citizen).  Why dig it up when you can just make it up? Constitutional Safety Valve?

trump-meme7c4702db8d5c78dfb311d702d63646aeSaw this interesting piece about the electoral college.  According to this, the founders set up the electoral college as a “safety valve” in case the people went nuts and elected some unfit buffoon as president.

As it happens, the people did not elect an unfit buffoon as president.  They elected Hillary Clinton.  She is currently ahead in the popular vote, although the counting goes on.  The unfit buffoon actually was elected president based on the way electoral votes are awarded.  In other words, the will of the people has been bypassed because of a senseless bureaucratic process for the fourth time in history.

So if the electoral college was meant to safeguard the Republic in the event that the people elected a raging demagogue, why can’t it be used to safeguard the Republic when the people did not elect a raging demagogue?  To put it another way, the electoral college exists in case the will of the people goes terribly awry, but why can’t it also be used to preserve the will of the people when it hasn’t gone terribly awry?  Hillary Clinton is an imperfect candidate to be sure.  But she is committed to our system of government.  She is knowledgeable, experienced, and capable.  And if she’s proven anything this campaign season, it’s that she is tough and level-headed, keeping her cool in very trying situations.  Unlike the thin-skinned Trump, who launched into bizarre, off-topic tirades against Rosie O’Donnell, Alicia Machado and many, many others.

By the way, Trump himself bashed the electoral college system in a 2012 tweet.  That tweet has since been deleted from Trump’s account but unfortunately for Trumpster-the-Dumpster, the internet never forgets.

This Election….Wow!

fish-533842__340

Not in the face please.

Update:  A lot’s been written about the questionable quality of media coverage this campaign season, but I think this is one of the best pieces I’ve seen so far.

When I woke up last Wednesday morning reality hit me in the face with a cold, dead fish.  America elected a vindictive, hateful, tantrum-throwing, orange Twitter-bully as the next President of the United States.  Trump’s campaign was all about dog whistles, and the dogs came running.  I thought America was better than that.  I really did.  I have friends and loved ones who voted for Trump.  I thought they were better than that, too.  That’s what makes it all so depressing.  There’s no hiding behind policy because Trump has no meaningful plans or ideas.  There’s no pretending it’s about character.  Yes, Hillary Clinton is flawed, but Trump is far worse.  Pretty sure Clinton has never bragged about grabbing anyone by the “p___y”.

I’m an Independent at heart.   I switched my party affiliation to vote against Hillary Clinton in two primaries – 2008 and 2016.  But I voted for her in the general election.  The idea of a Trump presidency was simply too unthinkable.  I’m in full agreement with Ana Navarro, who is one brave, principled Republican.  I will follow her on the Tweeter.  (I call it that because it annoys my daughter.)  Let’s hope that Navarro becomes the future of the Republican party and Trump slides quickly into its past, where he belongs. All Things Sewer

banner-1188502_1280There have been a few sewer-related items in Keys media lately.

First up is the flooding in Key Largo.  The high tides are causing problems with the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District’s (KLWTD) vacuum sewer system.  Crews are working overtime to clear the lines so the system keeps functioning.  A few comments. Continue reading

The Land Scarcity Chess Board – Part 3

chess-145184_1280Affordable housing is one of the big issues in the Keys these days.  There’s no question that a lack of affordability is a problem when it comes to retaining the local work force.  Local politicians have attempted to frame this issue as a “crisis” that demands urgent attention.  And, of course, taxpayer money.  Lots and lots of taxpayer money.  Every problem under the sun seems to require lots and lots of taxpayer money, doesn’t it? More Interesting Stuff About the Clerk’s Race

I votedUpdate:  The newspaper article discussed in this post was written by Brian Bowden and Charlotte Twine.  I emailed both of them to ask about the apparently false claim that Kevin Madok has been a CPA for thirty years.  After failing to receive a response, I contacted Managing Editor, Dan Campbell, and Publisher Paul Clarin.  No response but the silence speaks volumes.

There was a candidate forum in the Upper Keys.  Yes, the candidates for Clerk of Court were there.  I’ll keep this short because I’ve written extensively about this important race already, but there are some interesting tidbits I’d like to share.

The Free Press wrote about it, but as always the article will disappear next week. The entire article is preserved here for posterity.  Who knows?  We might want to refer back to it one day.

Saunders raised what I think is the key issue in this race.

“Madok has worked for the county, and it’s a conflict of interest,” Saunders alleged, since one of the clerk’s responsibilities is to audit the county. “I’m an independent watchdog.”

Another Hometown Key West Candidate Forum

head-607480__340

Decisions, decsions.

I finally got around to watching the Hometown Key West candidate forum from September 26.  (Sorry.  I’m a slow poke.)  Of course, I’m focused on the clerk’s race.  I think that’s a very important one.  On her watch, Amy Heavilin, corrected improperly recorded transactions having to do with the wastewater projects.  She also conducted an audit that found several county officials had misused their purchasing cards.  Unfortunately, Heavilin lost the primary on August 30, and is now facing a county-initiated investigation.  I’m sure the county was none too pleased with Heavilin’s fact-finding.  The voters choice in the general election is Republican Kevin Madok or Democrat Ron Saunders.

For me, Madok is an extremely problematic candidate. Continue reading
