Keys Media Comparison – Lockouts

fake-1903774__480

Update 2:  Here’s a press release from Ocean’s Edge about Ocean’s Edge.  The development is described as having 175 guest rooms and suites.  I’m having trouble squaring this with the affordable housing “crisis”.  Anyone else?

Update:  Here’s the latest from the Citizen.  The county commission decided not to investigate.  Shocker.  The good news is that State Attorney Dennis Ward attended the meeting, and asked county staff to provide a report on the project.  Perhaps there will be an investigation after all.

Once you see something, it’s  hard to unsee it.  Such is the case with Keys media weirdness.  I mostly comment on obvious, in-your-face falsehoods (Madok’s CPA license) or massive ball drops (Toppino’s conflicts of interest).  But there are other less dramatic instances of fact-skewing or spin that I notice, too.

I saw two in the online version of the Citizen today.  One is about “land use” issues.  The other is about Mayor Cates’s voting record. Continue reading

Fighting City Hall

Background on this accurate but gag-worthy image can be found here.

There are a lot of parallels between what’s going on at the national level right now and what’s been going on in Monroe County for decades.  The Trump administration has ushered in an era of “fake news” and “alternative facts”.  People are justifiably horrified.  Sales of George Orwell’s “1984” are booming.  For people in the Keys, this is just the same old, same old.  Their local governments have pushed “fake news” and “alternative facts” since time began. Cross Key Letter

writing-1149962__480I saw this thoughtful letter by Howard Gelbman in the Free Press about the Cross Key/Monroe Park situation.  It’s an open letter to Governor Rick Scott.  Scott hasn’t been terribly sympathetic to the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District (District) or to Keys citizens who would like to reform their own local government.  Unfortunately, I don’t think Mr. Gelbman will get much traction, but it can’t hurt for him to try.  Let’s take a look at his letter anyway. Change at the District – Looking Ahead

career-479578__480The Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District board declined to renew the general manager’s contract last Tuesday.  There’s an article about it in the Keynoter/Reporter.  Nothing in the sad, old Free Press.  I guess we won’t hear from them until next Wednesday.  Maybe someone should tell them about this new-fangled invention called the “internet“.  They can write their articles right after something newsworthy happens and then publish them right away.  Mind-blowing concept.  Right up there with fact-checking. Marathon Time Line

magnifying-glass-1607160__480
I saw this article in the Keynoter/Reporter a week back or so.

A former city of Marathon department head filed a federal lawsuit against her old employer claiming harassment at City Hall and a smear campaign that resulted in her firing in 2015.

Zully Hemeyer, former director of the Utilities Department, wants her job back, back pay, benefits, attorneys fees, punitive damages and the city and its employees to not violate her civil rights. She filed the federal lawsuit alleging her rights were violated under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

As you might recall, the City of Marathon had some urgent issues with its wastewater system.  So much so, that they entered into a consent agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).  It seems those issues are well on the way to being resolved, but the legal and political fall-out continues. If the Governor Really Wants to Help…

dollar_banner

Meh…it’s only taxpayer money.  Who cares?  Set it on fire.

Here’s what passes for “good” news in the Keys.

The governor included $15 million in his budget for the Florida Keys.  Here’s an item from the Citizen and another from the Reporter/Keynoter.  Here’s what county commissioner David Rice had to say…

“We are thankful that Gov. Scott continues to support the Keys in our effort to restore canals, collect storm water and do projects that enhance the water quality of the nearshore waters, which are critically important to the Keys’ economy and environmentally sensitive marine resources,” County Commissioner David Rice said on Tuesday.

So why am I not wholeheartedly embracing this “wonderful” news?  Well, if history is any guide, even if this money comes through it won’t do the Keys much good at all.  It will just be squandered on one ill-conceived boondoggle or another.  Not much to celebrate. Continue reading

Your Brain On Lies

directory-1187128_1280People are saying that America has entered a “post-truth” era.  Oh boy.  Well, the Keys have always been in a “post-truth” era so welcome aboard.  I guess we’re not alone any more.   Love him or hate him, very little of what Donald Trump says turns out to be true.  His supporters say we should “take him seriously, not literally”.  I’m not comfortable with all that tip-toeing around.  Someone who lies all the time is a liar.  So can we just call Trump what he is?  It’s a lot easier. Monroe Park Mess

bathroom-691341__480

Sorry.  This is all we can afford right now.

The Free Press covered the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District’s January 17th meeting.  Sounds interesting.  Robby Majeska was chosen as the replacement for Norm Higgins, who passed away unexpectedly in late December.  Majeska gave up his seat to run for the District 5 county commission seat against the Odious Sylvia Murphy.  Majeska will do a great job, just like he always has.

The article goes on to discuss the Monroe Park/Cross Key situation. Continue reading

Key Largo Wastewater – Grievance Policy

progress_newspaper-418919__480I had to chuckle over this story in the Reporter about the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District’s grievance policy.  They’re always having a spirited debate over something.  I think newly elected commissioner, Sue Heim, did a really good job of getting to the heart of the matter.
